Presoak 1 cup of garbanzo beans in 4 cups of water overnight or for 8-10 hours. Drain and discard soaking water. Bring 6 cups of water to a rolling boil in a large pot. Add the soaked beans, reduce heat, let simmer for 35 min. When done check with a fork to see if soft enough, drain and cool, ready to serve or use in recipes.
